Brooklyn Funk Essentials was born out of New York’s buzzing hip-hop-jazz and slam poetry scenes of the early nineties as a 12-piece live outfit consisting of some of the finest young musicians, singers, rappers, dub poets and DJs the Big Apple had to offer. BFE has released four albums, that along with massive critical praise, have earned them Grammy nominations and Billboard’s ‘Album Of The Year’ acclaim. But perhaps most notably, their amazing live shows have given them a worldwide loyal fan-base. The latest album, ‘Watcha Playin’ was released in the US in June 2009, and BFE are continuing their extensive worldwide touring this year.

“Not since the heyday of the Jackson 5 has such exuberant horn blaring been married to such sunny, melodic bass playing. Brooklyn Funk Essentials evoke a party in full swing, with jams that simultaneously tickle the ears and move the body.” (Dimitri Ehrlich – Interview (US))

“Grooving in unfathomable ways, the essential force of the funk can never be deflected from its true path. And verily, when the funk combines with the awesome grace of jazz and the power of hip hop, the world is made a smaller, friendlier, more tolerable place, and time is dislodged from its axis. For lo, the funk and the jazz and the hip and the hop hath newly got together in New York, uniting sundry disparate talents from around the globe and spanning several historic areas, and having a gas, and creating the album of the year…” (David Belcher – The Glasgow Herald (Scotland))

“When New York’s Brooklyn Funk Essentials hit a stage, audiences are treated to a mighty spectacle of a groove. The supremely fat musical foundation laid down by the band’s rhythm section is topped by swirling keyboards, a pumping horn section, a scratching DJ and a shifting cast of singers, rappers and poets…” (Chuck Crisafulli – Musician (US))
